For an organization known to stand for 65 years, one might assume that The Rock had a grandiose beginning. However, the organization was not formed due to ambitious students wanting to make a striking impact upon the school, but because of one of the simplest reasons: it was mandatory.
As mandated by the Republic Act 7079 of 1991, otherwise known as the Campus Journalism Act of 1991, The Rock’s first iteration was to become the Official School Publication of San Pedro College. It was tasked to represent the voice of the school, which allowed it to avoid being critical to the institution. By 2001, The Rock became the Official Student Publication of San Pedro College-thus, changing from being the institution’s official representation of information to becoming the voice of the SPCians alone.
The logo of The Rock from 1958-2000 bore the Staff of Aesculapius, which is associated withhealing and medicine, since the dominant course of San Pedro College was Nursing. By 2001, it was changed and made course-neutral. It emphasizes the skills developed by the publication (Arts, Writing, and Layout) and is still being used at present times.
As an integral part of SPC, The Rock’s milestones have always revolved around the involvement and participation of the whole SPC community. Each release allows the organization to foster and deepen the existing connection within the student body. In its ceaseless pursuit of excellence through responsible journalism, The Rock will always be an avenue for communication and information dissemination for the students, by the students.
