DEPARTMENTAL POLICES

Admission and Retention Policies

A. General Requisites for Admission to Nursing:

1. Must pass the following requirements:

i. Entrance examination given by San Pedro College.
ii. Nursing Aptitude Test (NAT) or National Nursing Aptitude Test (NNAT) whichever is applicable.
iii. Interest Test.
iv. Basic Personality Index.
v. Panel Interview.
vi. High School WPA of 82% or better.

2. At least five (5) feet in height and with proportional body weight.
3. Physically fit and had none of the following physical deformities/characteristics which may hamper the execution of nursing services; such as but not limited to the following:

i. Strabismus or squinting, legal blindness.
ii. Kyphosis (kuba) and moderate to severe scoliosis (lateral deviation of the spine).
iii. Skin disease (open lesions) on arms, legs, acne, etc.
iv. Cleft palate, even if repaired.
v. Speech defects such as stuttering, “nguho”, etc.
vi. Deafness or difficulty of hearing; only one ear is functioning.
vii. Deformity of the upper or lower extremities.

4. Morally fit and psychologically stable without history of mental illness or nervous breakdown.

B. Classroom (promotion to the higher level):

1. Must not have a failure in any subject.
2. Has a WPA of 82% for the two (2) semesters including summer.
3. Must have a grade of at least 75% in nursing subject(s) or subjects closely related to nursing. If the student obtains a grade below 78%, he/she must be given a last chance status.
4. Only students who completed delivery room cases will be admitted to the third year.
5. Only students who completed operating room cases will be admitted to the fourth year.
6. Must be physically, morally, and psychologically fit (without history of mental illness/nervous breakdown) to perform nursing care services.

C. Shifters/Transferees:

1. Must pass the following:

i. Interview with the Department Dean.
ii. Entrance exam for shifters/transferees.
iii. Nursing Aptitude Test (NAT), Basic Personality Index, and Interest Test.
iv. Panel Interview.

2. Has no grade below 80%.
3. Must be physically, morally, and psychologically fit (no history of mental illness/nervous breakdown) to perform nursing care services.

D. Returnees
     A returnee must:

1. Take the prescribed exam as advised by the Admissions Officer and/or Dean of Nursing.
2. Submit for a physical examination in the Health and Wellness Center prior to admission.

E. Graduation Requirements:
     In order to qualify for graduation, a student must fulfil the following:

1. Academic Requirements Must have passed and completed the academic requirements of the BSN curriculum of the College.
2. Related Learning Experience (RLE) The following requisites must be fulfilled/accomplished satisfactorily as required by the Technical Committee on Nursing Education (TCNE) and Board of Nursing (BON) before one can attend graduation rites:

i. Basic Life Support Training
ii. Major surgical cases as scrub nurse
iii. Major surgical cases as circulating nurse
iv. Handled deliveries
v. Assisted deliveries
vi. Immediate newborn care

F. Exclusion from the Graduation and Pinning & Awarding Rites:

Graduating students who have accumulated fifteen (15) or more extension days for whatever reasons shall be excluded from the Graduation and Pinning & Awarding Rites.

G. Departmental Awards:

Clinical Excellence Award and recognition for an outstanding performance in the clinical area may be given to deserving students who performed efficiently in one or more areas of expertise in nursing. The recognition shall be during the Pinning and Awarding Ceremony.

1. Clinical Excellence/Efficiency Award

 i. Criteria

1a. The candidate must be a fourth year nursing student.
1b. He/She must not have committed any major or minor errors which necessitated appearance before the Committee on Clinical Conduct or Student Conduct Committee.
1c. He/She must be highly recommended by the level coordinator, clinical instructors, and the headnurses, who have supervised him/her in various clinical settings.
1d. He/She must have a RLE weighted average grade of 88% or better with no grade below 84% in any area.
1e. He/She must be a recipient of at least 3 clinical awards.

2. Clinical Awards – Clinical efficiency in the various areas of nursing is recognized by the Department of Nursing. The student shall have a WPA of 85% or better with no grade below 82% in any clinical area. 1a, 1b and 1c above shall also apply in choosing the awardees.

 i. Outstanding performance in:

1a. Community Health Nursing
1b. Medical Nursing
1c. Surgical Nursing
1d. Pediatric Nursing
1e. OB/Gyne Nursing
1f. Ward Management
1g. Psychiatric Nursing
1h. Intensive Care Nursing
1i. Practicing Clinical Instructor
1j. OR Nursing
1k. Delivery Room Nursing
1l. Emergency Room Nursing
1m. School Nursing
1n. Geriatric Nursing
1o. Oncologic Nursing

3. Other awards

 i. Outstanding performance in:

1a. Nursing Research
1b. Seminar in Nursing

4. Non-academic award may likewise be given to graduating students with outstanding talent in any field of the arts, subject to the criteria which the department’s Committee on Awards may formulate.
