LRC GENERAL INFORMATION

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) provides and responds to information needs of its clientele promptly and positively with acts of courtesy, professionalism, and respect. The librarians, staff, and faculty work together to promote effective use of the LRC.

To meet the changing student needs in studying, SPC LRC Learning Commons was constructed. A Learning Commons is a dynamic learning space that combines the services of the LRC with academic computing and other academic support units. It is also a student-centered learning facility that offers access to the college’s information resources and provides “human- centered” design. The following services are available at the SPC LRC Learning Commons: two group study rooms equipped with smart TVs and LCD projectors; printing services; computer stations; comfortable seats; access to library databases; IT support; and educational board games.

To further support students and faculty, seven group study rooms are available on the 4th floor for collaborative study and discussions. Additionally, nap rooms are provided on the 3rd floor and in the Graduate School Library for those who wish to rest and recharge.

To facilitate the fast returning of borrowed books and to avoid incurring fines for overdue books by students, an exterior book drop was purchased and installed at the main entrance of the LRC.

Equitable lending policies are extended to all patrons. Likewise, digitization of printed collections, in compliance with copyright policies, is provided in the LRC to enhance the availability of reading materials.

The shelving system of the book collection is open-shelf so that students and faculty can have easy access to and retrieval of the reading materials. Moreover, regular announcements of new acquisitions and other promotional activities are posted on the library bulletin board, in faculty rooms, and on the school website. LRC also maintains a Facebook account, which serves as an avenue to keep in touch with the clients. An interlibrary loan arrangement is provided to faculty and students.

SPC LRC collections are catalogued and classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System. The journal and magazine articles are indexed and encoded in the Destiny Library Manager, an automation system used by the LRC, and can be accessed through the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). The OPAC terminals are regularly updated and provided on the third, fourth, and fifth floors of the LRC, in the faculty rooms, and on any computer units with internet connectivity. In addition, access is available via mobile devices, enabling users to conveniently search and locate materials anytime, anywhere.

Bibliographic and research assistance are provided to library users. There is also library orientation and instruction given to new faculty members as well as freshmen and transferee students at the beginning of the school year.

SPC LRC holdings offer a wide range of collections to support recreational reading, teaching, and research programs at undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels of the academe. The LRC collection consists of relevant and up-to-date books with more than 35,000 titles and almost 43,000 volumes.

Aside from the regular purchasing of books, LRC’s acquisition of non-print materials has reached almost 2,000.

In addition, there is also a yearly renewal of subscriptions to magazines, newspapers, and standard scholarly journals. LRC has more than 100 journal and magazine subscriptions.

SPC LRC also provides access to a wide range of e-book collections, including ProQuest E- book Central, Cambridge, Gale, Wiley, and World Scientific. It also offers numerous full-text journals electronically through databases such as ProQuest Central, Gale Reference Complete, and EBSCOhost. Articles are accessible via the following EBSCOhost databases: Academic Search Premier; Academic Search MAS Ultra – School Edition (High School); Primary Search (Elementary); Religion and Philosophy Collection; ERIC; GreenFILE; Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts; Business Source Elite; CINAHL Plus with Full Text; and Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection. All electronic databases are available at both the SPC Main and Ulas campuses. To streamline access and eliminate the need for multiple remote access login credentials, the LRC has subscribed to Knimbus, a Single Sign-On (SSO) platform that integrates all LRC-subscribed databases and the Destiny Library Manager. Access to Knimbus may be requested via the SPC Learning Resource Center Google Chat, LRC Learning Commons, or the Information Desk.

The LRC follows a regular weeding program to discard obsolete materials in order to maintain the quality of the collection. SPC LRC also initiates and maintains resource-sharing arrangements with institutions that are members of the Davao Region Librarians Council- Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. (DRLA-PLAI, Inc.) and Davao Association of Colleges and Universities Network (DACUN).

The LRC is conveniently located on the third, fourth, and fifth floors of the St. Therese Building. Further, the LRC is furnished with functional, well-designed standard furniture and equipment. It is arranged in a manner that can promote effective utilization as well as smooth flow of traffic. Furthermore, the LRC is aesthetically attractive, properly maintained, fully air- conditioned, and well-lighted.

As to the LRC’s security and control, at the entrance, there is a SmartLib attendance system in which the student will have to either tap their ID or scan the QR code printed on their ID before they can enter. The LRC user’s name, course, and year will appear. At the exit, there is assigned library personnel who will check the users’ things, and at the same time, there is an RFID security gate, a theft control device, which will alarm if the materials are not properly borrowed from the circulation counter. Likewise, the LRC is equipped with 21 CCTV units.

San Pedro College aims to provide its constituents with the best education, from instruction to facilities and services. Supporting this goal, SPC Learning Resource Center, through its Instructional Multimedia Center (IMC), manages the Audio-Visual Rooms with its theater/screening room equipped with a cinematic projector, interactive projectors, motorized wide screens, aesthetically designed acoustic panels, comfortable seats, customized lighting, carpeted floors, and a centralized control room. The AVR can also accommodate dubbing, video and audio recording, and videoconferencing services, as well as seminars and lecture venues. Recently, renovations, upgrades, and general cleaning have been conducted in both AV rooms to provide the SPC community with better service. With a capacity of 113 persons, the AVR 1 is now being utilized in handling fused classes. Equipped with multiple wireless microphones, students and the faculty can discuss interactively. AVR 2 can accommodate a maximum of 50 persons. With the provision of movable and stackable chairs, the room can be used for video recording for activities such as podcasting. Both rooms can also be fused to accommodate a bigger group. In addition, instructional multimedia materials and equipment are also provided to the faculty and students of SPC.

In response to the organizational goal of the college, which is intensifying college- community engagement, the LRC has created a literacy program in collaboration with the CEES Department by providing reading materials to mission schools and the adopted community. Further, the LRC has conducted capability training for the library staff and faculty of the Dominican mission schools. Furthermore, the LRC has organized Mindanao-wide seminar- workshops for teachers, librarians, library staff, and library science students since 2012. Likewise, the seminar-workshops conducted since 2017 were granted Continuing Professional Development units by the Philippine Regulations Commission.
