𝐒𝐏𝐂-𝐂𝐑𝐂𝐘 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐈𝐇𝐋 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

San Pedro College – College Red Cross Youth Council (SPC-CRCY) spearheaded an orientation on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of human rights protection on Sept. 5 at Audio-Visual Room (AVR) 1.

With the theme, “The Humanitarian Press: Upholding Human Dignity Beyond the Frontlines,” the afternoon program focused on international protections for noncombatants and civilians during warfare.

Opening the lecture portion, Red Cross Youth (RCY) Davao representative Mary Louise Armilla unpacked the fundamental principles of IHL.

“One of the very main reasons bakit kasali si Red Cross organization sa pag-disseminate ng IHL … nagkaroon ng Red Cross because of the idea of [the] father of Red Cross … nagkaroon siya ng ideas … and [it’s] to have an international treaty, specifically yung rules to govern war,” Armilla said.

Armilla emphasized that even war has limits to protect basic human decency.

Shifting the lens to the legal framework, Jose Mari Fabiaña, Commission on Human Rights (CHR) representative, led the second discussion focusing on the laws, statutory laws and enforcement of IHL.

Fabiaña emphasized that systematic violations cannot be dismissed as secondary consequences in law enforcement consequences.

“Cooperation with illegal drugs is a criminal act, so it’s not right to use [it] as justification for killing children as collateral damage … excuse na lang para maproteksyunan ang mga — those who violate the law,” Fabiaña said.

Following key presentations, an open forum and structured discussions rounded out the event.

Capping off the activity with an official awarding of certificates and closing remarks, the activity sought to strengthen participants’ knowledge of humanitarian principles.
