In partnership with the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Davao and Most Outstanding High School Graduate (MOHSG) program, the San Pedro College School of Counseling and Psychology (SPC-SCP) organized a Peer Counseling and Mental Health Support Activity for MOHSG 57 nominees at the SPC Audio-Visual Room (AVR) on March 7.
Gathering 42 participants, morning events kicked off with an opening prayer, the singing of the national anthem, Davao hymn, SPC hymn, and the JCI Davao creed, vision and mission.
Following the presentation of objectives, MOHSG Chair Arman Miguel Jo Montero delivered his opening remarks, urging the student leaders to fully immerse themselves in the workshop.
“It’s not just about session-session lang… Be open to all the experience[s] that you will be learning in MOHSG… I know there are a lot of stories here. Be open to the journey, savor the moment, and just enjoy.”
Ice-breaker activities followed, allowing participants to share their memorable experiences and expectations for the event.
A session on “Foundations of Peer and Basic Facilitation Skills,” led by Nexan Umbod of the SPC Guidance Counseling and Testing Center, introduced the role of peer facilitators and ethical practices.
“Helping is not fixing. Fixing mindset is the tendency to immediately solve a peer’s problem. But what’s a facilitating mindset? It’s the approach of guiding and supporting peers by listening… by helping them explore their own thoughts and possible solutions,” Umbod stated.
Resource speaker Demmi Joe Ledesma, former president of the SPC Association of Psychology and Human Services Students (AssoPsycHSS), led the session on “Basic Interviewing Skills in Peer Counseling,” demonstrating effective questioning and listening techniques while identifying common communication barriers.
During the afternoon activities, participants were grouped into seven teams to write scripts for three-minute presentations, applying lessons from the morning sessions with the assistance of the SPC Peer Facilitators Group.
Photo opportunities and the distribution of the certificates of recognition marked the culmination of the day-long event, leaving students with practical lessons to enhance mental health advocacy and emotional resilience.
