San Pedro College Office of Student Affairs (SPC-OSA) conducted its annual moderatorsโ conference, “Tinguha 2.0,โ at Tropika Hotel on Oct. 20-21, featuring a session on redefining the role of moderators in connecting with Generation Z and Alpha students.
Highlighting the importance of meeting the students where they are, Noli Ayo began his talk by sharing his personal experiences that necessitated his change in philosophy, urging moderators to โchange with the change,โ moving away from past leadership models.
โBuilding connections with students requires effort and discernment,โ the coach said.
Ayo also noted that traditional authority is no longer enough to engage learners who value emotional sensitivity and show growing skepticism as they easily access information online.
To address this, affirmation and collaboration were cited as keys to mentorship, with the speaker noting that small gestures make students feel valued and that moderators must adapt to learnersโ diverse backgrounds.
Moreover, moderators were urged to act as coaches rather than reminders, fostering trust through accessible and mindful communication.
โThatโs the beauty of being a coach; you are given the opportunity to create a lifelong impact. Love serves,โ he stated.
Ayo also remarked that exposure to excellence helps students recognize what is beyond their limits.
โWhen you put your students in a position to be with the best, when they go back to the ordinary, it becomes easy,โ he added, stressing the need to raise standards for the new generation.
In addition, moderators were encouraged to pause and let students speak when attention wanes and to build networks as a form of โcurrencyโ for sharing wisdom and support.
Lastly, Ayo stated that one can only guide others as far as oneโs own experience, encouraging moderators to travel and โhave a passport,โ saying that exposure to unfamiliar places develops humility and widens perspective.
To close the event, Culture and Arts Coordinator (CAS) Roy Villanueva explained the meaning behind โTinguha 2.0.โ
โThis is actually the second year. This was launched last year, and we use Tinguha because Tinguha is yearning, itโs growth, itโs allowing you to look forward to what is to come,โ he said.
Villanueva added that Tinguha will remain the name of the moderatorsโ conference in the years ahead.
