Reiterating the significance of the countryโ€™s economic growth and national competitiveness, San Pedro Collegeโ€™s (SPC) annual international collaborative and multidisciplinary research conference, Madayaw, catered to various researchers and scientists worldwide to introduce their studies at SPC Philomene Labrecque Hall through HyFlex modality on Aug. 14.

SPCโ€™s President, Sr. Aida T. Frencillo, OP, Research, Publication and Innovation Center (RPIC) Director Elsa May Baron, and guests Alvin Culaba and Brian Wong Kee Mun preceded the ribbon cutting of research posters.

โ€œPeople who work for science are the ones who create the future,โ€ Sr. Frencillo enunciated as she welcomed the guests, students, and participants.

Culaba, the keynote speaker and a multi-awarded scientist and academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized that knowledge has the capacity to diffuse everywhere, allowing national weaknesses to be addressed.

โ€œIncremental innovation is still good as long as it adds value, involves various resources, and contributes to the innovative ecosystem,โ€ he added.

After the keynote address, the program transitioned into an open forum, allowing participants to engage in discussions and ask questions.

Following the forum, a certificate of appreciation was awarded to Culaba in recognition of his valuable contribution.

The session concluded with a brief wrap-up, summarizing key takeaways and expressing gratitude to all attendees.

Remark Mortalla, Director of Community Engagement and Extension Services (CEES) and the vice chair of Madayaw 7.0, commenced the afternoon session by introducing the international plenary speakers.

Brian Wong Kee Mun, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Design, and Arts of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Malaysia, discussed 3Ms for Micro-sized, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME): The Survival Kit.

โ€œKeyword for adapting to a new environment is flexibility โ€” the 3Ms: Mindset, Model, and Marketing,โ€ Mun highlighted.

The topic embraced SPCโ€™s transition to enforcing business and education programs other than medical and health courses.

Afterward, Sharina Binti Yunus, assistant professor and deputy director of the Enterprise Office of Universiti Teknologi from Brunei, deliberated on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Research.

Yunus highlighted the deep learning revolution through algorithms, data, and computing, where AI can be used for innovative purposes towards impact and advancement.

On the same day, the research and development product exhibit and bilateral sessions for linkages started.

Jasley Babe Eulogio, a research participant from the University of Mindanao, expressed that SPCโ€™s exposure and yearly hosting have been constantly improving and that the speakers have been more informative.

Pilar Teresa Medidas, a faculty member from the SPC School of Nursing, also shared points with regards to the event.

โ€œThe plenary speakers gave a meaningful insight and new mindset, which we can use to teach students and make San Pedro College a world-class learning facility,โ€ Medidas said.

Furthermore, in an interview with The Rock, Baron expressed her sentiments as one of the eventโ€™s vice chair.

โ€œDespite the uniformity of the style and the program, we ensure that the topics and the speakers would be Madayaw enticing,โ€ Baron further explained.

This yearโ€™s Madayaw marks its seventh installment since its first installment in 2018.
