Aspirants for Astra: Intramurals 2026 underwent comprehensive technical training and live performance simulations during the San Pedro College (SPC) Speech Societyโ€™s โ€œSpeaking of the Blockbuster: A Hosting Workshopโ€ on March 1 at the Clovis Thibault (CT) Building, Room 201.

Structured as both a lecture-intensive seminar and an official audition prerequisite, the full-day initiative reinforced hosting roles, etiquette, script writing discipline, adaptability, and stage command in preparation for one of the institutionโ€™s largest annual events.

Resource Speaker Jessica Anne Dela Paz underscored the responsibility embedded in the role of a host, grounding the session in institutional representation rather than personal recognition.

โ€œHosting is the heart of every event,โ€ Dela Paz said, emphasizing that while hosts serve as the public face of programs, โ€œthe event is not about you โ€” you are the face of the event.โ€ She underscored the necessity of studying oneโ€™s audience, coordinating closely with organizers and working teams, and remaining flexible amid inevitable program changes.

The morning segment detailed hosting etiquette across pre-event, mid-event, and post-event phases, alongside instruction in scriptwriting, vocal modulation, time management, and professional neutrality. Dela Paz highlighted adaptability as the defining trait of competent hosts, reminding participants that โ€œprogram flow is always subjected to changeโ€ and that composure under pressure distinguishes preparedness from mere confidence.

Participants transitioned into practical demonstrations and guided simulations before proceeding to afternoon auditions, where they delivered prepared scripts individually or in pairs based on selected intramural events. Judges โ€” composed of Speech Society hosting officers, Saligan Supreme Council (SSC) and Program and Productions Committee heads and representatives โ€” further challenged aspirants with impromptu scenarios to assess their real-time judgement and stage presence.

For third-year BSMLS student and Hosting Division member Alexia Shane Fernandez, the simulation phase proved most demanding.

โ€œFor me, the most challenging part was the simulation part,โ€ Fernandez said, citing the difficulty of anticipating unforeseen stage incidents while maintaining audience composure. โ€œThrough the advice they gave, I learned a lot throughout this audition, and Iโ€™m looking forward to the upcoming intramurals.โ€

Event Head and Hosting Associate Royette Gabriel Carr described the workshop as a prerequisite mechanism to ensure only prepared hosts assume official roles during the multi-day celebration.

โ€œThis hosting workshop is actually a prerequisite before the hosting aspirants can be posed on the different days,โ€ Carr said. โ€œThis workshop strengthens, enhances, and boldens the courage to step up and take roles for Astra: Intramurals 2026.โ€

Carr also observed a marked increase in both participation and performance quality compared to previous years, aligning with the organizationโ€™s guiding principle to โ€œstand and deliver.โ€

Concluding with evaluative feedback and selection deliberations, the workshop formalized the pool of hosts tasked with steering the energy, flow, and professionalism of the forthcoming intramurals โ€” transforming preparation into performance before the main stage even opens.
