To enhance proficiency in hosting and debating, the San Pedro College (SPC) Speech Society held a team-building activity, promoting unity and developing confident speakers on Feb. 1 at the Audio Visual Room (AVR) 1.

Entitled “How to Train Your DRAGON: Driving Rhetoric and Growth, Optimizing Nexus – Riders of Rhetoric: A Team-Building Quest,” the event focused on collaboration, communication, and leadership development among members.

Opening the program, first resource speaker Svetlana Yvonne Balaan shared her expertise in hosting, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and noting that communication skills benefit not only hosts but all members.

“If you want to join Speech Society, it is because you carry an identity not only of yourself but also of those who came before and those who will come after you,” she said.

Balaan, also a former member of the Speech Society, expressed pride in the organization’s growth, citing its members’ strong willingness to learn.

Moving forward, Kathryn Amor Dela Peña, their second resource speaker, discussed and shared her debating experiences and practical tips in the field.

“If you have a craft, you have to practice it. Talent is not something you should leave as it is — if you have it, you should practice it and use it to influence others,” Dela Peña said.

She also emphasized the importance of perseverance and confidence, noting that people are less likely to believe a message if the speaker does not believe in themselves.

Members were then divided into teams to present cheers and demonstrate speaking skills in the Odyssey Mentorship Program (OMP) by applying newly learned techniques.

In the afternoon, the team-building program commenced, focusing on activities that promoted teamwork and collaboration among members.

To officially close the program, President Jolleah Nica Sulfelix delivered the closing remarks, extending gratitude to members who attended the team-building events and encouraged continuous participation in future projects and workshops.
