In a showdown of sports, literary, and special event prowess, Physical Therapy (PT) students from San Pedro College (SPC) and Mindanao Medical Foundation College (MMFC) engaged in the interschool PTkan 2026 held on April 21.

Sam Arpon, president of the MMFC PT student organization, expressed that their participation in the event over two years has been both a privilege and a success as it connected students with the same program.

“Gina-look forward ko for the next year’s event is more schools, kasi with PTkan madami kayo makilala [and] yung mga fellow interns namin makita namin ulit outside the clinics,” Arpon stated.

Schools were split into three districts of which Sanguis slashed to the overall championship title, spearheading mixed volleyball, Valorant, Pinoy Henyo, and quiz bee.

First runner-up Neuris won pickleball, badminton women, Mobile Legends, and flag-raising, while second runner-up Kinera flexed in basketball, badminton men, amazing race, and impersonation.

On the other hand, the photo essay, research presentation, advocacy video, vocal duet, and liveliest delegation were skipped this year.

MTV spoof was bagged by the lone entry from Sanguis, a rendition of “Miss Miss” by Rob Deniel.

Special performers from Neuris and Kinera formed A Band, a nod to the dark band of a muscle’s sarcomere, in the place of Battle of the Bands.

Crystal Janiola, team head of Sanguis, reflected that their success was attained through overcoming financial limitations with resourcefulness to provide for their players and pageant candidates.

“By working together, we have built a beautiful bond between ourselves, which I believe is the true essence of PTkan, and aligned with the goals that I have set for my team — which is to amplify confidence and brave the fear through camaraderie,” Janiola said.

The team head also noted that the rescheduling of the event was a challenge in its own right.

Sanguis’s Tranze Elzin Rativo and Kinera’s Jacklyn Piansay earned the Mr. and Ms. PTkan crown, respectively.

In Rativo’s winning answer to elevating the recognition of PT services in the community, he touched on his platform as a means to raise awareness and encourage other students to do the same.

“We already have one of those in SPC, which is the [CEES] that we do in Barangay Talandang, wherein we go from house-to-house and give exposure, educate, and even give free treatment to each of the houses,” he remarked.

For Piansay, the question on embodying the institution’s core values in patient care allowed her to weigh in personal convictions as an intern.

“In my clinical experience, it is because I have care and love for my patients that I am able to assess thoroughly and create treatment plans that are tailored to their needs and wants … so that I can not only add years to life, but also life to years,” she said.

Standing beside the pair were Kinera’s Felan Grant Yu and Neuris’s Alex Mae Ann Datuin in first runner-up, with Neuris’s Raphael Asilo and Sanguis’s Viviana Layno in second runner-up.

Customary to SPC’s Association of Physical Therapy Students (APTS) programs, PTkan featured a seminar on neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT) in evidence-based practice.

Pediatric PT Daynielle Adaro described NDT as a general neurologic foundation that focuses on facilitation and movement analysis to identify the patient’s specific needs.

“Kahit ano pang diagnosis yan, we only have one goal: to optimize the child’s ability to explore the world and their main occupation to play and go to school,” Adaro emphasized.

The approach is characterized by three layers of priority mounted on touch: alignment or postural stability, system or internal factors such as emotions and mental capacity, and task, which depends on what the child or the family wants to achieve.

“As future physical therapists, your hands will guide movement, but your reasoning will guide outcomes,” the speaker concluded.

Adaro also dedicated her talk to the little ones, saying that they teach adults about life beyond what is instructed in textbooks.

PTkan is an annual activity that hosts PT schools across Mindanao to advance excellence, sportsmanship and camaraderie in the profession.
