San Pedro College (SPC) launched a cultural heritage exhibit at the Tri-B building, 9th floor, this May in line with its observance of Cultural Heritage Month.

Centered on the theme โ€œRoots and Horizons: Our Shared Heritage, Our Collective Future,โ€ the exhibit features musical instruments, woven materials, and traditional attire that reflect the diversity of Filipino cultural expressions, with a particular focus on communities in Mindanao.

Observed every May under Presidential Proclamation No. 439, series of 2003, Cultural Heritage Month aims to promote awareness and appreciation of Filipino identity, values, and traditions.

Arvie Villegas, Social Science and Humanities Coordinator, emphasized that the initiative seeks to extend learning beyond the classroom and into lived cultural experiences.

โ€œFirst of all, every May, we celebrate Cultural Heritage Month or the Pambansang Buwan ng Pamana… The main purpose of this Cultural Heritage Month is to strengthen the student’s appreciation of Filipino identity, our values and traditions,โ€ Villegas said.

He also added that the celebration also reinforces the role of culture in the academic setting.

โ€œWe celebrate it because to remind the school community that culture is part of education and nation buildingโ€ฆ It provides an opportunity for students to recognize the richness of our local heritage or national heritage here in the Philippines,โ€ Villegas shared.

Traditional items from various indigenous groups in Mindanao are also featured in the exhibit, allowing students to engage more closely with their traditions and practices.

โ€œIt helps students to understand the stories, the values, and tradition behind cultural objectives and practices of the different tribal communities, especially here in Mindanao,โ€ He said.

Villegas underscored the continued relevance of cultural awareness, particularly in a rapidly evolving modern society.

โ€œIt helps young people understand who they are and where they came from โ€ฆ Even though we are in the 21st century, it is important because it helped us to, you know, prevent our cultural traditions, our languages, and values from being forgotten.โ€

The initiative aligns with the United Nationsโ€™ Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG) 4, which promotes inclusive and quality education.

โ€œCultural education promotes exclusive and meaningful learning which is central to quality education โ€ฆ It helps students become globally aware while remaining rooted in their own culture,โ€ Villegas shared.

The exhibit is part of SPCโ€™s broader effort to integrate cultural appreciation into academic life, reinforcing its role in holistic education.
