As part of its commitment to expanding mental health services and psychological well-being, San Pedro College School of Counseling and Psychology (SPC-SCP) unveiled its newly implemented Family Welfare and Wellness Center (FWWC) at the Saint Therese building on July 8.

Located between the Gate 2 entrance and the cafeteria, FWWC opened its doors to offer accessible psychological services, including assessment and diagnosis, one-on-one and group counseling, psychotherapy sessions, treatment planning, case management, and consultancy and coaching programs.

According to SCP Dean Henry Yap, the center was conceptualized in July 2022, taking inspiration from Ateneo de Manila University’s Center for Family Ministries (CEFAM).

Serving both as a practicum and training site for SPC’s undergraduate and graduate students, FWWC helps establish the department’s specialty in family and marital counseling through services provided by in-house clinicians and professors.

“We are starting first within the community, with San Pedro College students and faculty, but the long-term [goal] is to serve our community in Agdao and to the society at large to cater mental health services,” Yap expressed.

Gender and Development (GAD) and Family Welfare Program Coordinator Orencita Lozada further explained that the center was developed from merging of Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-mandated GAD and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-mandated Family Welfare efforts, addressing mental health needs not covered by existing services.

“[Wellness] would mean the mental health and well-being ng mga empleyado and mga students, [who] are not alone in their issues. The program cascades not only to the students themselves, but as well as sa ilahang pamilya; these are the populations we would like to serve,” Lozada shared.

FWWC will further coordinate with the academic and human resources (HR) offices to ensure effective referral and support for the SPC community.
