San Pedro College’s Office of Student Affairs (SPC OSA) resumed with “Tinguha 2.0,” an assembly aimed at polishing the leadership of moderators within their clubs and organizations, held Oct. 20 to 21 at the Tropika Hotel.

First day sessions focused on OSA’s core functions, student discipline procedures, student activity procedures, and sports programs, highlighting operational excellence.

While these were a review of established processes, the segments helped to correct misunderstandings that would have caused delays or disunity.

Gaps in the presentations were reserved for the open forum in which moderators could either express concerns or share best practices.

One recurring issue raised was that students, despite a successful monetary collection survey and imposed sanctions, will refuse to pay membership fees, even to their departmental organizations.

The concerned party cited that many interns from the previous batch had graduated without settling their dues.

Prior to this, it was clarified that clubs and organizations may decide on increasing the membership fee as long as they can justify that the current budget can not sustain their operations.

OSA responded that they will propose to the finance office the addition of departmental organization moderators as signatories on students’ clearance forms, while also reminding attendees to work within their budget if possible.

While discounts are available for college students, it was raised that Senior High School (SHS) varsity players are not afforded the same benefit.

For perspective, both SHS and college students require the same athletic fee under the tuition, but students of the latter are charged again every semester.

College Sports Coordinator Charles Suarez stated that these scholarships were provided before as they worked on increasing the fee, but was reverted to the original collection when sports activities ceased during the pandemic.

OSA has since moved to reinstate the initiative, however, the finance office responded that any tuition increase must be presented again to the parents and the Department of Education (DepEd).

To answer another query, Suarez also disclosed that discounts of 25% to 100% are assigned to student-athletes depending on their track record, former coaches’ input, and performance during SPC’s annual sports clinic before tryouts.

Rosa Medel Libot, OSA’s college assistant head, advised moderators to guide their students following a series of concerns related to sponsorships, especially as SPC maintains a dress code.

“It’s one way also to protect our [pageant] candidates and hosts … that’s why we set standards, there’s already proof na pwede man ta mag ingani sa stage without showing [our] entire skin,” Libot said.

On another note, OSA mentioned a new policy in the works in which certificates must be processed 10 to 15 days after the event, a measure to prevent backlogs in graduating students’ portfolios dating back to the previous administration.

Culture and Arts Coordinator Roy Villanueva reminded moderators that clubs and organizations requesting their services should automatically cover the performers’ certificates.

Policies may be revisited in the 2025 revision of the student handbook, though the physical copies are only available to the first years at present; The next printing date was not given.

Student Activity Coordinator Ariel Pescones offered that despite the limitation, OSA can provide a manual and a set of organization essentials similar to those found in the handbook.

With the theme, “Weaving Bridges from Discord to Understanding – The Moderator’s Role in Transforming Conflict into Collaboration and the Subtle Art of De-escalation in Leadership,” this installment of Tinguha 2.0 explored connecting with students beyond the usual club and organization management.
