Hawai\u2019i International Conference on English Language and Literature Studies (HICELLS) 2024 gathered researchers, teachers, and scholars at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, Davao City on May 15.<\/p><p>Twenty-nine studies worldwide were presented during Parallel Session 1, divided into four cluster themes.<\/p><p>Sessions simultaneously commenced at the hotel\u2019s four (4) different halls, namely Lantawan, Hari, Sultan, and Datu.<\/p><p>LANGUAGE AND MEDIA<\/p><p>In Lantawan Hall, seven (7) studies were pitched, with Howard Decasa of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) &#8211; Kidapawan City Campus kickstarting the post-lunch session with the study \u201cRegister Analysis of Digital Dialects.\u201d<\/p><p>Mindanao State University (MSU) &#8211; General Santos reps then presented two separate studies, with Dyulliana Anushkah Toyogon elaborating on \u201cDecoding the Rap and Ripple: A Semiotic Analysis of Rappler\u2019s Editorial Cartoons\u201d followed by Adrian Lee and Rhaiza Marie Elegado\u2019s \u201cEyes on Queer: Exploring the Rise of LGBTQIA+ Representation in Mainstream Media.\u201d<\/p><p>Saint John Paul II College of Davao\u2019s Darryl Imperial talked about \u201cShow Me How You Hashtag: Sentiments on #NasaanAngPangulo\u201d succeeded by Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and University of Santo Tomas\u2019 (UST) Raffy Quines\u2019 \u201cExamining the Identities in the tweets of the Philippines\u2019 *Unkabogable Comedian Vice Ganda*: Twitter as an online comedy bar?\u201d<\/p><p>Finally, MSU-Nawaan\u2019s Lovely Actub-Parungao and Davao del Norte State College\u2019s (DNSC) Rogie Barquilla sealed the hall\u2019s first parallel session with the discussion on \u201cInitiation in the E-Negotiation of Facebook Ukay-Ukay Trading: English and Images\u201d and \u201cMorphological Analysis of Some Slang Words on Social Media,\u201d respectively.<\/p><p>DIGITAL LITERACIES AND LANGUAGE LEARNING: TECHNOLOGY AND E-LEARNING<\/p><p>Seven studies were exhibited at Hari Hall with Saint Louis University\u2019s (SLU) Johnell Desalit discussing two studies, namely \u201cEnhancing 21st Century Literacy Skills Through Developing Digital Stories\u201d and his co-researched \u201cInterpreting Social Media Memes: Exploring Variations in Understanding Gen Z slang across Gen X, Gen Y, and Gen Z\u201d along with Wei Chi and Marielle Carganilla.<\/p><p>Reymar Flores and JC Jun Gallera of DNSC introduced \u201cLinguistic Features of Hate Posts in the 2022 Philippine Presidential Election Campaign Season\u201d and \u201cA Sentiment Analysis on Teachers Perspectives on Building Presence in an Online Learning Environment,\u201d respectively.<\/p><p>In addition, Mirasol Gaoiran from Bohol Island State University-Calape Campus spoke about \u201cEnglish Proficiency and Learning Dispositions Among First Year Education Students.\u201d At the same time, Universiti Brunei Darussalam\u2019s Karizza Bravo-Sotelo concluded the 1st parallel session at Hari Hall with \u201cMa\u2019am, sorry I lost my connection\u201d: The Affordances and Constraints of the Online Environment to Filipino Mathematics Students\u2019 Translanguaging Practices.\u201d<\/p><p>ENGLISH LANGUAGE POLICY: LANGUAGE TESTING AND EVALUATION<\/p><p>Among the eight (\ud83d\ude0e studies presented in Sultan Hall, Benguet State University (BSU) produced three (3), followed by St. John Paul II College of Davao with two researches.<\/p><p>Jocel Dolo and Alexee Jaezhelle Pugong were the first pair from BSU to present the study \u201cA Scoping Review of Language Programs and Policies in ASEAN Countries,\u201d followed by \u201cTracing the Employability of Bachelor of Arts in English Language Graduates: An Assessment of the Program Outcomes\u201d by Ju-ann Banisa and Jerolyn Lumabas.<\/p><p>Afterward, separate solo presenters from St. John Paul II College of Davao discussed their studies \u201cThe Post-Pandemic Challenges of College Students on the Use of English Language in Oral Reporting: A Qualitative Inquiry\u201d and \u201cProfessional Development Plan for In-Service Teacher Certificate Holder\u201d by Louie Jay Caloc and Amie Matalam, respectively.<\/p><p>USM-Kidapawan City Campus\u2019 quartet Mona Melliah Ba\u00f1as, Leziel Gabriel, Gloren Pobre, and Ruselle Ann Robledo had \u201cRepetitive Drills in Addressing Speech Articulation Errors\u201d instantly followed by \u201cThe Use of Foreign Cartoons in Learning English Language: A Quantitative Study\u201d by Klyle Rafael I\u00f1iego Paguio of Rizal Technological University.<\/p><p>Finally, the session at Sultan Hall ended with \u201cExploring View and Practices in Teaching English for Sustainable Development (TESD) Towards Course Development\u201d by North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) \u2013 Lianga\u2019s Princess Jane Ruedas and \u201cTypes of Feedback on Students\u2019 Written Outputs: Bases for Feedback Templates\u201d by BSU\u2019s Matin Evony Moling and Nicole Zarate Saysayen.<\/p><p>LITERATURE IN VARIOUS FIELDS<\/p><p>Jenevieve Lumbu-an of Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) opened Datu Hall\u2019s premises with the study \u201cEffectiveness of CALL (Contextualized Aid in Learning Literature) in Developing Students\u2019 Formalistic Analysis Skills.\u201d<\/p><p>Hameeda Linog\u2019s \u201cImages of Violence and their Contribution to Aesthetic Value in Literature\u201d from MSU-Institute of Science Education (ISED), followed by Lumbu-an\u2019s and afterward \u201cLepers from Cradle: Incriminating Surpanakha\u2019s and Circe\u2019s Parents as the Primary Deterrents to their Respective Individuation Quests in Lanka\u2019s Princess and Circe\u201d by University of Malaya\u2019s Henusha Suthesan.<\/p><p>Philippine Science High School-Eastern Visayas Campus\u2019 Dennis Bruce Lerion then talked about \u201cFABLAB-Based Learning in Teaching Literature: A Teaching Module on Aldous Huxley\u2019s \u2018Time and the Machine,\u201d which was followed by \u201cMoods and Modalities of Carlos Palanca Award Winning Short Stories: A Content Analysis\u201d by Victoria Portugal Jayag from Notre Dame of Kidapawan College (NDKC).<\/p><p>Lastly, Marie Rose Costes of the University of Mindanao presented \u201cThe Layers of Suffering of the Selected Tragic Heroes in the Holy Scripture,\u201d and Jessevel Montes\u2019 \u201cEnhancing Creative Nonfiction Skills Through Juggling Literary Material Among Students\u201d from Bukidnon State University settled the
