San Pedro College Animal Laboratory and Research Hub (ALRH) successfully conducted its first Faculty Skill-Builder 101: Animal Handling & Training, Green Technology of Plant Extraction seminar-workshop last November 28–29. The event was organized and led by Dr. Fatima May R. Tesoro, RPh, Director of ALRH; Mr. Daniel Joshua C. Pendon, RPh, MSPharm, Head of Operations; and Mrs. Rody Rica B. Agdipa, RPh, Assurance & Linkages Officer.
The two-day workshop provided participants with comprehensive training on the ethical handling of laboratory animals, specifically mice, rats, and rabbits. The sessions emphasized proper handling techniques grounded in humane care principles, with a focus on minimizing pain and distress while ensuring compliance with institutional and internationally recognized ethical standards.
Participants also received in-depth instruction on key laboratory procedures, including blood extraction in rats and rabbits and the administration of substances via gavage, intradermal, and intramuscular routes. These discussions highlighted the importance of accuracy, competence, and adherence to welfare-focused protocols.
On the second day of the workshop, the training progressed to more advanced procedures, including jugular vein blood extraction in rabbits and cardiac blood extraction in rats, further reinforcing the technical skills and ethical responsibilities required in laboratory research. The final session focused on Green Technology in the Extraction of Essential Oils and Terpenes, offering participants insights into sustainable and environmentally conscious methodologies for plant extraction.
The successful implementation of the Faculty Skill-Builder 101 seminar-workshop reflects San Pedro College’s continued dedication to fostering excellence in research and laboratory practice. By equipping faculty members with advanced competencies in ethical animal handling and sustainable plant extraction techniques, the ALRH strengthens the institution’s commitment to responsible, high-quality scientific work. This initiative marks a significant step toward fostering a research culture grounded in integrity, innovation, and environmental stewardship—further solidifying San Pedro College’s reputation as a leading institution in the advancement of ethical and sustainable scientific research.
