The Laboratory is a place of learning where students can explore and widen their knowledge about the world. All users of the laboratory are enjoined to take good care of its facilities and equipment.




DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF LABORATORY INSTRUCTORS:


  1. The presence of the laboratory instructor is required in all laboratory sessions.Students will be dismissed if an instructor fails to report to the laboratory after 30 minutes of waiting time.
  2. Extension of laboratory hours or make-up sessions should be minimized. The approval of the Department Dean to be noted by Vice –Pres for Academic Affairs is required for any make-up sessions.
  3. The Instructors should make a complete list of chemicals to be used in the experiment (request form is available at the stock room) concentration and quantity of chemicals should be specified.
  4. The instructor should remind/guide the requesting group in their requisition.
  5. Instructors should file a request of chemicals at least one day before the experiment. Cut off time for the requisition of the 7:30 – 10:30 laboratory class is 2:30 P.M. Failure to request on time would mean no issuance of chemicals.
  6. Instructors should acknowledged receipt of the list of chemicals to be used for the period.
  7. Instructors should notify the laboratory personnel in case of accidents.
  8. The instructors should give students 15 minutes before dismissal to clean glass wares, tables etc. and to prepare themselves for the next class/ to go home.
  9. Cleanliness and Orderliness in the Laboratory must be maintained. Instructors concerned and the requesting group should be the last one to leave the room. They should see to it that :
    1. Working tables, sink, floor, fume hood are cleaned.
    2. Electric fans, lights, fume hood, water, gas outlets are switch off.
    3. Stools are arranged under the table.
    4. Doors are locked.
  10. The instructor should guide the students in implementing the proper disposal of laboratory waste.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS:


  1. The presence of the laboratory instructor is required in all laboratory sessions. Students will be dismissed if an instructor fails to report to the laboratory after 30 minutes of waiting time.
  2. Cleanliness and Orderliness in the Laboratory must be maintained. The requesting group should be the last one to leave the room . They should see to it that:
    1. working tables, sink, floor, fume hood are cleaned.
    2. electric fans, lights, fume hood, water, gas outlets are switch off.
    3. stools are arranged under the table.
    4. doors are locked.
  3. The students should notify the instructor in case of accidents.
  4. Unauthorized experiment is strictly not allowed.
  5. Specific procedures of the different laboratory classes must be complied accordingly. (Refer to Special Instructions to Specific Lab. Classes a and b)


STUDENT CONDUCT IN THE LABORATORY


  1. Dress Code and Safety Precautions
    1. The rules in school uniform applies to all students who report for laboratory classes
    2. The use of laboratory gown, mask and goggles and prescribed shoes are required during laboratory sessions in Chemistry and other activities where it is applicable, e.g. dissection, staining, culture media preparation.
    3. The use of hand gloves is optional.


  2. Conduct
    1. Loitering in the laboratory corridors is not allowed.
    2. The use of other devices such as cell phones, and music players is prohibited.
    3. The laboratories and its corridors shall not be used as practice area for student activities like dramatics, dance contest, or cheering contest.
    4. Electrical outlets in the laboratory should not be used for charging cell phones.
    5. Meals or eating snack foods should be avoided inside the laboratory.
    6. Work quietly. Avoid boisterous laughter or loud discussions inside the laboratory.
    7. Clean as you work. Tabletops should be free of any unnecessary materials. Return stools and clean the work area before leaving the laboratory.
    8. Use the culture hood & fume hood when necessary.


  3. Use of Lockers
    1. Each laboratory class can avail of lockers and should provide padlocks.
    2. Student will inform the laboratory personnel if their padlock is ready.
    3. A group assigned to a particular locker is responsible for its orderliness and cleanliness.
    4. The walls of the locker must be kept neat and clean of graffiti.
    5. Dust cloth must be kept inside the lockers. If necessary wash dust cloth, wring it well and hang it inside the locker.
    6. It is unethical to tamper with other lockers. Defiance to this rule is subject to disciplinary action.


  4. Proper Waste Disposal
    1. Trashcans are available inside the laboratory and along the corridors.
    2. The sand bucket is not a garbage can. The sand in the bucket is intended to put off fire caused by gasoline or other organic liquids.
    3. Labelled containers for laboratory waste are provided. Please follow the guidelines set for each type of waste.


  5. Clearance

  6. The Laboratory clearance will be issued only when the following conditions are met:
    1. All borrowed items from the stockroom has been returned or accounted for. Broken or lost items should be replaced or paid in cash.
      • For Payment – secure a charge slip from the laboratory stockroom for payment to the cashier and present the official receipt to the laboratory personnel.
      • Replacement of apparatus must be of the same brand, size or capacity.
    2. The lockers used have been emptied and cleaned. A fine of P150.00 for damaged locker.
    3. Penalties for overdue materials are settled.
      • For payment of fines - secure a charge slip from the laboratory stockroom for payment to the cashier and present the official receipt to the laboratory personnel.


BORROWING AND RETURNING PROCEDURE


  • A group requisition notebook is required for every laboratory subject.
  • Cover the requisition notebook with a plain colored paper designated by the laboratory assistant for each class.
  • Submission of requisition notebook to the stockroom should be before the performance of the first experiment. (The requisition notebook is under the safe keeping of the laboratory department. Fill up your request at the counter.)
  • Use the group requisition notebook for borrowing or requesting apparatus/equipment and other materials.


GENERAL RULES FOR REQUISITION


  1. The Group assigned to make the requisition for apparatus should file the request at least one day before the experiment. Cut-off time for the requisition of the 8:00 – 11:00 AM laboratory class is 4:30 P.M. Failure to request on time would mean no issuance of apparatus.
  2. On the scheduled lab. session, the group assigned for requisition will withdraw the materials from the laboratory stockroom. The student/s who will receive the supplies from the laboratory stockroom shall be responsible for:
    1. inspection, that the materials are in good condition;
    2. counting, that everything is according to the number required;
    3. affixing his signature before leaving the stockroom.
  3. The laboratory assistant will put a check mark (/) on each of the item requested and issued to the requesting group
  4. The student’s ID card will be retained in the Laboratory Stockroom for the duration of the use of said apparatus. The ID card will be returned only after all borrowed materials are accounted for.
  5. The student’s ID card must be presented when borrowing flame shield and iron stand.
  6. The laboratory assistant shall entertain no complaints once the materials/supplies are properly received and taken out of the stockroom.
  7. Additional or late requisition of materials will not be entertained.
  8. All apparatus should be CLEAN and DRY before it is returned to the laboratory stockroom, use detergent in washing glass wares and do not heat dry especially test tubes. All groups in the class are held responsible for washing and drying the apparatus assigned to them.
  9. The apparatus and chemicals to be returned should be received at the laboratory stockroom within the last 15 minutes of the laboratory session. This period is allotted for the checking of the apparatus being returned.


SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO SPECIFIC LABORATORY CLASSES


  1. CHEMISTRY
    1. Only one group shall request for materials, equipment, and apparatus for the entire class.
    2. Only one experiment will be performed per laboratory period except for conductance and pH (Inorganic Chemistry).


  2. ZOOLOGY, BOTANY, MICROBIOLOGY AND OTHER LABORATORY SUBJECTS
    1. In every laboratory session only one group is assigned to request the materials and apparatus needed by the whole class.
    2. All groups in the class should file their requisition for microscope, prepared and empty slides.
    3. In Microbiology, all materials for autoclaving, incubation, and refrigeration must be properly labeled. Write your name, group number, year and section.
    4. For Marine Biology and Coastal Management materials: A fine of P50.00 per day for each item is imposed for failure to return after one week of the scheduled activity.


  3. OTHER LABORATORY MATERIALS
    1. There are supplies available at the laboratory stockroom, e.g. filter paper, cork, pH paper, lancet, capillary tube and litmus paper.
    2. Students shall provide themselves with the following supplies:
      1. padlock for locker
      2. marking pens
      3. labels/masking tape
      4. pair of scissors
      5. soaps/detergents
      6. tissue paper
      7. cotton
      8. 70 % isopropyl alcohol
      9. dust cloth
      10. stapler w/ staple wires
      11. match



ANY STUDENT VIOLATING ANY OF THE ABOVE RULES AND REGULATIONS WILL BE SUBJECTED TO DISCIPLINARY ACTION
